In the Old Port of Trieste stands Magazzino 18, a “place of memory”. This space preserves traces of a painful chapter in Italian history, a complex twentieth-century story that continues to resonate today.

Magazzino 18 houses hundreds of remnants of everyday life: chairs, wardrobes, mattresses, beds, crockery, photographs, toys and other common household items, all catalogued with names, numbers and the label “Esodo Service”. They are fragments of lives profoundly affected by historical events.

Following the 1947 Peace Treaty, Italy lost large areas of Istria and the eastern Adriatic coastal region, and around 300,000 people chose to leave their homes and face an uncertain future.

The performance, which combines historical documentation, artistic sensitivity and poetry, is based on a text by Simone Cristicchi and Jan Bernas. The CLAET Theatre Group from Ancona, a city closely connected to this historical event, brings to the stage an intense and compelling story, paying tribute to a memory that must not be forgotten.
