Željko Sarić's Kinegrafija at Makina Gallery – At the Intersection of Photography and Film
PULA, 8 July 2026 – On Wednesday, 8 July, the iconic Makina Gallery in Pula will open Kinegrafija, a retrospective exhibition by renowned cinematographer and film director Željko Sarić. Showcasing works created over the past two decades, the exhibition explores the liminal space between the frozen photographic moment and the continuous flow of cinematic time.
Kinegraphy: A New Hybrid Medium
At the heart of the exhibition is kinegraphy, a distinctive visual technique developed by Sarić in the late 1990s using a 35 mm synchronous rotating camera (SRF 360). Unlike conventional photography, which isolates a single instant, kinegraphy synthesises time and space through movement. The resulting images form captivating, undulating structures reminiscent of dreams and the subconscious, creating a visual rhythm characteristic of moving film.
A Dialogue with History: From Drašković to the Present
A special focus of the exhibition is the series The Passage of Karlo Drašković, in which Sarić revisits one of the most significant photographs in the history of Croatian photography—The Leap of Count Stjepan Erdödy (1894). While Drašković sought to "freeze" movement in the nineteenth century, Sarić sets it in motion once again through kinegraphy, transforming it into mist-like sketches of a shifting reality.
