ŠMEK: Screening of Films

On Thursday, July 30, at 8:00 PM, a screening of films created as part of the first ŠMEK School of Media Culture and Cultural Criticism will take place.

Over the course of nine days, the School’s participants – students, high school students, as well as current and former cultural and media workers – explored the theme of labour in Pula. Through the programme, they developed theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge and skills for analysing visual media content and producing short ethnographic films and reels.

The screening will feature four short films that explore different aspects of working life and memory in Pula: the ways in which memories of the Uljanik Shipyard are preserved and passed on through the skills and experiences of members of the Twin Horn motorcycle club; the leisure time of Filipino workers who share a passion for basketball; family farming through the story of the Siljan family farm; and the traditions of the baking craft through the story of the legendary neighbourhood Arena Bakery.

After the screening, a discussion will be held with the film participants, authors and mentors, followed by an after-party with the now well-established house DJ Nikonja.
