ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

The Marathon Family is a cult black comedy deeply embedded in the cultural memory of the region through the unforgettable Topalović family and their funeral business. Based on Dušan Kovačević's play of the same title, written in 1972 before it became the basis for Slobodan Šijan's legendary film The Marathon Family, the story has lost none of its enduring appeal.

With its brilliant dialogue, unforgettable characters and absurd plot, the Croatian National Theatre in Osijek brings to the stage the distinctive brand of black humour that mocks both death and false morality. It is a timeless story about "the oldest family in the Balkans"—so ancient that not even death itself can defeat them.
