San Sabba Rice Mill –About the Former Nazi Camp

A conversation dedicated to the San Sabba Rice Mill in Trieste, a museum and national memorial site that is at the heart of the photographic exhibition “Remembering the Victims, A Warning to the Living”, will be held at the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria in Pula. The exhibition is on view at Pula’s Kaštel from July 15 to September 14, 2026.

The exhibition’s closing programme will focus on the history, memory, and contemporary significance of one of the most important sites of suffering in the northern Adriatic region.

Anna Krekic, conservator, director of the museum, and curator of the exhibition “Remembering the Victims, A Warning to the Living”, will speak about the San Sabba Rice Mill as an institution and a place of remembrance.

Photographer Marino Ierman, author of the photographs featured in the exhibition, will present a visual perspective on the site and discuss the role of photography in preserving memory. Historians Igor Šaponja and Igor Jovanović will speak about the deportations of Istrians and the system of concentration and transit camps.

The evening conversation will accompany the exhibition during its final stage, ahead of its closing later that same day, offering visitors an opportunity to see the exhibition one more time and to further explore its themes through a discussion with the participants.
