A theatrical gem starring Daria Lorenci Flatz and Tarik Filipović, directed by theatre director Arija Rizvić, tells the story of a young married couple who, together with their daughter, flee besieged Sarajevo at the end of the 1990s.

With just two bags in their hands, they arrive in Vienna, where they must create and rebuild their lives from the ruins of war and find a way to happiness. Their story is just one of many similar stories from our region, where exile or the economically motivated emigration that has been a reality for years has, in one way or another, left its mark on almost every family. This is precisely what gives the play its broad appeal: it can reach a wide and diverse audience, who will easily recognise themselves and people from their own surroundings in the characters and fate of Mirna and Amir.

The play explores two kinds of love: the love between a couple, which changes and gradually fades under the influence of circumstances and time, and a person’s love for their homeland – the place they come from, where they know every “corner and stairwell.”

What makes a place ours? And what, over time, disappears from that place, from us and from our lives in a foreign land – and what new things take root and grow?

The play’s text was written by dramaturge Nikolina Bogdanović. It is based on the personal experiences of Bosnian refugees gathered through interviews, and has been expanded and enriched with the personal experiences of the creative team, whose own life stories are closely connected to the themes and motifs of the play.

The production approaches its serious subject matter with appropriate gravity, but also with the distinctly Bosnian humour that finds an opportunity to laugh even in the most difficult of circumstances. Da sam ptica is a play that will make audiences laugh and cry, while taking them on an intimate journey through Bosnia and into the personal love story of two people.
