THE NECKS IN PULA: the legendary Australian trio at Circolo

One of the most important groups in contemporary improvised music will perform in Pula on 19 September.

The Necks will bring their unique blend of jazz, minimalism, improvisation and experimental music to Circolo.

The Necks, one of the most acclaimed and influential groups in contemporary improvised music, are coming to Pula. The Australian trio, consisting of pianist Chris Abrahams, double bassist Lloyd Swanton and drummer Tony Buck, will perform on Saturday, 19 September, at 9 p.m. in the Circolo Hall, as part of the Jazzbina Pula 2026 programme.

Founded in Sydney in 1987, The Necks have spent almost four decades developing one of the most distinctive musical languages in contemporary improvised music. Their sound moves between jazz, minimalism, ambient, contemporary classical music and experimental music, while at the same time resisting any simple genre classification.

Their performances are based on extended forms that emerge through the gradual development of musical ideas. Repetition, rhythm, silence, dynamics and the smallest changes in sound become the material from which the three musicians build complex and often hypnotic structures. Rather than relying on predetermined arrangements, The Necks leave plenty of space for mutual listening and improvisation, making each of their concerts a unique experience.
