RENDEZ-VOUS AU CINEMA

Rendez-vous au cinéma is a French film programme organised in partnership with the French Institute in Croatia, the Croatian Independent Cinemas Network (Kino mreža) and the Croatian Audiovisual Centre.

As part of the programme, Kino Valli will screen three films that showcase contemporary French cinema through a variety of stories – from a moving tale of unexpected family bonds and an animated journey through the natural world to a cult thriller by Claude Chabrol.

THE TIES THAT BIND US (L’attachement, Carine Tardieu, 2024)

Sandra is a fifty-year-old librarian who has consciously chosen to live alone and remain childless. Her everyday life changes when her neighbours ask her to look after their young son. Following the death of the boy’s mother, Sandra gradually forms a bond with the child and his grief-stricken father, Alex. A moving story about grief, modern family relationships and the bonds we often neither expect nor choose.

Along the banks of a picturesque river, various animal species grow up and explore the world around them. This acclaimed French animated film, created using a unique stop-motion technique with paper figures, follows their first steps in nature as they learn and adapt to their habitats, celebrating the awakening of life.

LA CÉRÉMONIE (La cérémonie, Claude Chabrol, 1995)

Young Sophie takes a job as a maid in the elegant Brittany home of the Lelièvre family. After befriending Jeanne, the local postmistress, their growing closeness develops into a shared rebellion against the family. Claude Chabrol’s cult thriller explores class divisions, suppressed anger and the boundaries that can all too easily be crossed.
