„Usporavanje” Sanja Merćep
mall scenes, ordinary objects, intimate details and places of pause become prompts for reflecting on how we look at the world and which images we choose to give importance to. The series also touches on the question of “big themes” in art and public space, and on the ways in which certain subjects are singled out, valued and given our attention.
Slowing down is also a choice to adopt a different pace of looking: to linger on a scene, photograph it, and allow it to exist without the need to be spectacular or particularly significant. The photographs bring together personal experience and recognisable scenes from contemporary life, transforming their everyday nature into a space for silence, rest and new meanings.
Sanja Merćep (Zagreb, 1989) graduated in Photography from the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, having previously completed a degree at the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb. She worked in the advertising industry for several years, an experience that significantly shaped her artistic interest in the commercialisation of public space and the hidden dimensions of contemporary life.
In 2024, she received the second prize in the Ivan Kožarić Award for Young Artists competition, organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, for her series Coast, which was subsequently acquired for the MSU collection. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
See you at Makina Gallery!
