The origins of Dr. INAT date back to the 1984/85 theatre season, when director Branko Sušac and a group of young enthusiasts gathered around him recognised the need to establish a theatre nucleus in Pula. Initially operating as the Drama Section of the “Mate Balota” Cultural and Artistic Society, the group soon adopted the name INAT. The choice was deliberate, as the name encapsulates both the spirit and the history of this remarkable theatre ensemble, whose work has left a significant mark on the theatrical life of Istria, the former Rijeka region, and Croatia as a whole.
Although many talented young actors from Pula contributed to its success, the first and most prominent actor of INAT was, and remains, the incomparable Šandor Slacki. In addition to being the company’s leading performer, he also served for many years as the head of INAT’s School of Stage Movement and Pantomime.
The work and achievements of INAT have gained recognition both nationally and internationally, demonstrated through numerous performances across Croatia and at theatre festivals in 23 countries on four continents. Over the years, Dr. INAT has received around thirty awards in Croatia and abroad.
Dr. INAT is also one of the founders and co-organisers of the International Theatre Festival PUF and the international theatre project Anno Domini.
The company is a member of AITA/IATA (the International Amateur Theatre Association, affiliated with UNESCO), the Croatian Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI UNESCO), and IETM (the International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts).
