THE OBJECT BECOMES SUBJECT#SPINE
In a time of exterminatory wars and genocides, political lies, the stripping away of women's rights over their own bodies while the paradigm of the male body remains unquestioned—seeking once again to control, possess, and restrict the female body—amid growing economic inequalities, femicide, violence, dogmatic social and cultural norms, and rigid structures, I speak out and resist through the exposure of my own embodiment and pain.
The body is the only thing we truly possess, and I occupy, reclaim, and return my body to myself. What appears to be the infliction of pain, self-injury, and physical violence paradoxically becomes an act of care for the body. By taking responsibility for the well-being of my own body—which is simultaneously a social body—by entering into pain and searching for a way through and beyond it, I release fear and act according to my own convictions. This act brings the subject into visibility.
Through the freedom to breathe within the female body and through assuming responsibility for oneself, the journey from the female body as object toward the female body as subject begins. Gentle and slow actions, the act of bending, and a confined space open a pathway toward subjecthood and freedom. The performance is an act of self-care, of raising one's voice, of using one's deformity and pain as a means of standing up for oneself. The identity of the female subject within the intimate space of performance becomes the primary weapon in confronting the politics of our time.
